SAFT MRX BATTERY

SAFT battery

SAFT MRX batteries ensure the safety of onboard electrical systems in trains as a very compact and fully integrated backup system with a service life of up to 15 years. They provide a reliable backup power source for vital onboard train services such as lighting, data and communication systems, ventilation and door opening functions, as well as safety-critical electromagnetic braking requirements. While in use, the battery is always connected to the grid via the train's catenary and onboard converters (floating mode), its function is to provide energy in the event of a grid failure or catenary break.

MRX are Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) 230Ah batteries with the following technical characteristics:

  • Type sintered/plasticized with polymers based on propylene (PBE).

  • Composed of 54 cells

  • Voltage 1,2 V

  • Application High-Speed Train (TGV)

  • Resistant to extreme temperatures from -50°C to +70°C (-30°C ~ +50°C in operation)

  • Is easy and inexpensive to maintain, with a 2-year refill interval

  •  Individual battery life of 15 years.

The TotalEnergies Ecosolutions Advantage

As part of its environmental commitment, Saft promotes the use of recycled raw materials, reduces air and water emissions from its factories year after year, minimizes water use, reduces fossil fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions, and ensures that its customers have recycling solutions for their used batteries.

For industrial Ni-Cd batteries, Saft has partnered with collection companies in most EU countries, North America and other countries for many years. This collection network receives and ships its customers' end-of-life batteries to fully licensed recycling facilities.

100% of Saft MRX batteries are recycled. For their European markets, they are recycled either at their own Saft AB (Sweden) recycling plant or at SNAM (France). In the recycling process at their plant in Sweden, Cadmium, and Nickel compounds are recycled and reused in a closed-loop to manufacture new industrial Ni-Cd batteries.

SAFT batteries have a 15-year life span and a better energy yield than conventional batteries (market reference, 4 years life span).

The Environmental Performance

Compared to lead-acid batteries of 210 Ah "plasted" type with 36 cells, voltage 2V and a life span of 4 years, reference product on the market and for an equivalent service, SAFT batteries show the following environmental performances:

  • A reduction in primary energy consumption of 11%.
  • A reduction of 46% in greenhouse gas emissions

This comparative review has been based on a Life Cycle Analysis for the functional unit: "to provide backup power over a 15-year period, at a rate of one discharge per month, from a battery used for railway applications, with a 210 Ah to 230 Ah charge (with similar performance), which provides 9.5 kWh".
